Lab Technician – Indianola, PA

PURPOSE

The Laboratory Technician supports and performs all routine testing needed in the microbiology laboratory.  The Laboratory Technician prepares samples and supplies for testing, qualifies incoming materials for use, performs endotoxin, bioburden and compressed air testing, and supports the preventive maintenance program for all laboratory equipment.  The incumbent works under general direction and uses judgment to make the correct decisions.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work is performed under general direction from the Laboratory Manager and/or Scientists & Technicians;
  • Demonstrates competency by complying with established procedures;
  • Daily duties include:
    • Temperature Monitoring;
    • Material / Glassware Preparation;
    • Depyrogenation cycles;
    • Environmental Monitoring;
    • Sample Preparation for Bioburden and Endotoxin Testing;
    • Paperwork Review;
    • Data Entry;
    • Sample Shipment;
    • Scanning and archiving of laboratory records;
    • Performs growth promotion testing;
    • Performs endotoxin testing with the Endosafe method;
    • Performs leak testing of pipettes;
    • Investigates and documents deviations with assistance as required;
    • Qualifies new LAL reagents for Endosafe method;
    • Performs Preventive Maintenance on Equipment;
    • Performs Gram Staining;
    • Performs Compressed air testing;
    • Performs water bioburden testing;
    • Performs endotoxin testing with the Gel Clot method;
    • Qualifies new reagents for Gel Clot testing;
    • Performs product bioburden testing;
    • Other duties as assigned.

WHO YOU ARE

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

  • High School Degree/GED;
  • Medical device and/or pharmaceutical manufacturing experience or microbiology/chemistry laboratory experience;
  • Demonstrates the ability to work under minimal direction;
  • Possesses analytical skills required to troubleshoot basic technical problems;
  • Able to develop solutions to a variety of problems of narrow to moderate scope and complexity;
  • Effectively communicates with peers and internal customers to resolve issues related to lab testing;
  • Proactively identifies potential problems and puts in place preventive actions;
  • Able to work independently as well as with teams;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Skilled with MS office applications;
  • Models a positive "can-do" attitude applies skills to achieve team goals;
  • Experience/knowledge of cleanrooms and controlled environments (design and operation);
  • Experience/knowledge of basic laboratory equipment operation (autoclave, water baths, incubators, freezers, etc.);
  • Ability to train manufacturing employees on cleanroom behavior and techniques.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's Degree in science or engineering discipline or 2-year trade/military school;
  • Minimum 5 years of medical device and/or pharmaceutical manufacturing experience or microbiology/chemistry laboratory experience;
  • Experience/knowledge of microbiological test method development and validation;
  • Experience/knowledge of purified water systems (design and operation);
  • Experience/knowledge of compressed air systems (design and operation);
  • Experience/knowledge of software and/or spreadsheet validation.
